What problems do students of Tier 2 /Tier 3 engineering colleges in India tend to face?

Disclaimer: the answer is with respect to most of the colleges. There may be exceptions, but those are quite insignificant and I am ignoring those and talking only about the majority.
I have interacted with thousands of students from various colleges, the majority being those who are from Tier 2 and 3 colleges. Here are some of my observations:
  • Lack of Mentorship: this is by far the biggest issue that they face. Most of them are on their own, without any proper guidance. The Professors are hardly concerned about students’ learning. The seniors are incompetent. As a result, the students are seriously misguided. Most of them end-up at IT services companies, slogging for half of the day on a minimum salary, not being aware of the opportunities in life that they are losing.
  • Lack of Motivation: due to the above factors, most of the students easily lose motivation and give-up in life. The little kid who was dreaming of becoming a pilot ends up working at Infosys or TCS for a salary of 3 lakhs a year.
  • Lack of Awareness: the students tend to stay within their cocoon of what their seniors and Professors teach them and thus they lose out on a large number of opportunities due to lack of awareness. For instance, even today, most students depend on campus placements to get a job, not knowing that there are great online portals for jobs and internships.
Even today, I get messages from students asking me if they should learn Java, given that they have learnt Python. The sad reality is that these students are taught the wrong way - they are taught that knowing more programming languages implies a better programmer.
